This palm has small 2 feet wide, stiff, deeply-cut dark green leaves that are
rounded in outline and held on shorter petioles than T. fortunei, which
gives the plant an overall more compact look. It is as
cold hardy as the popular T. fortunei ( –11 degrees), but far more wind
tolerant due to their shorter stiffer leaves, making them perfect for gardens
in exposed areas. They are incredibly beautiful: neat,
tidy, upright, and jaunty. It seems to be slower growing when young but picks up its growth after a few years and can double its size in a year if provided well drained soil with some fertilizer.
This beautiful and rare species of Aloe evolved in the high elevations of the
Drakensberg mountains of southern Africa. It was first brought here to Santa Cruz and propagated by a man named
Alan C. Beverly while staying in Lesotho. Many succulent plants
have basal rosette morphology but none have achieved such a striking
spiral of leaves. A mature plant will have five rows of leaves either
clockwise or counterclockwise. The plants tolerate snow and temperatures between 10 and 90 degrees F. It grows best in cooler temperatures such as along the coast of California.
The family was named after
Proteus, a Greek god capable of changing his shape at will. It includes
some 60 genera and 1400 species of Southern Hemisphere plants, the bulk
of which are native to southern Africa and Australia with the remainder
coming from South America and many of the Pacific islands. These unique flowers are great for bouquets or wreaths. Fairly easy to grow they prefer slightly more acidic soil than normal, excellent drainage and do not like phosphorus. The ideal fertilizer is Cotton Seed Meal because it provides both acidity and low phosphorus. Some varieties are hardier than others. We carry the following varieties at our nursery: Protea '7/11', Protea 'Brenda', Protea laurifolia 'White Owl', Protea 'Pink Ice', Protea 'Rose Mink'
This is an enchanting and unique looking trailing perennial. The silver-gray mound of evergreen foliage produces golden/orange/red flowers
all year long in mild climates. We carry two varieties called 'Gold Flash' and the hybrid 'Amazon Sunset'. Use in hanging baskets, cascading over walls or as a thick groundcover. Full
sun provides best flowering and growth results. Plant in well drained, fertile soil and water enough to keep
moist until completely established with average water needed during
growing season. Lotus needs frost protection in winter. Do not let this plant dry out and you will be rewarded with an abundance of beautiful parrots beak-like flowers all summer long!
This magnificent tree is famous for its 2-inch lavender
bells in summer and the carpet of fallen blossoms that forms around it. Before
flowering, the foliage, which is extremely finely divided, is also highly attractive.
The wood is purple with dark venation. The seed capsules are quite decorative in arrangements. It gets 25-40ft. high and 15-30 ft. wide with an open, irregular, oval-headed habit. Hardy to 25 degrees F/-4 degrees C. At Silver Leaf Nursery we have multi-trunk trees available in 15 gallon size pots.
